House of Joppa
I have always loved decorating. Decorating and organizing to be exact. Growing up in a single parent home that taught me valuable (sometimes hard) learned lessons, I found structure in keeping my room organized. When outside of that room, life was unsteady, I could find safety in my space, my little room.
There is something steady and reliable about keeping your space tidy and beautiful. It says something about who you are like the clothes you wear. When my husband and I converted to the Catholic faith in 2014, it was a purposeful, prayer driven, and Holy Spirit guided decision.
We were chugging along as happy little Protestants at our amazing church and God decided to shake things up for us. After we discovered the beauty of the Catholic faith we began to fall in love with the church’s art in all its mediums: the stunning frescos, statues of Mary and the Saints. The architecture of the basilicas and cathedrals. The scents of incense and chrism oils.
Once we observed this beauty, we made intentional choices about what we put in our home. We wanted our home decor to reflect what our eyes were opened to: the fullness of the faith.
When you decorate your home, is it a reflection of your faith? Is it a reflection of that inner light of intention? If it isn’t, then it should be. Because when the world around us feels unsafe, unsteady, you can find peace in your home by reminders of the faith, anchored through prayer and the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Once we did this in our home, whether perfectly clean and organized or not, served as a reminder of Jesus, Mary, and the Saints guiding us to Heaven. And it remains our little space, steady in the world around us.
